We recently delivered our 40-hour Level 3 Advanced BPA Training Course at Thames Valley Police Training College, near Reading, UK.
During the week, participants from Northumbria University, Forensic Science Ireland, Cranfield University, Thames Valley Police and Keele University consolidated their current understanding of BPA with a refresher of the main bloodstain pattern types and application of Objective Criteria in pattern recognition, before moving to more advanced applications. This included area of origin determination of impact patterns and an in-depth session on the enhancement of blood scenes using luminol.
This training is delivered over a series of instructor-led practical exercises, which allow participants to apply their BPA knowledge and skills to various simulated crime scene scenarios, and is supplemented with classroom-based sessions dealing with advanced BPA applications including documentation of complex patterns and contextual evaluation.
It is always a pleasure for us to watch the team gel throughout the week and start to share their own experiences of the interpretation of complex BPA at scenes and to see them recognise the strengths and limitations in the science and how to deal with these in an evaluation.
We are sure that the students will stay connected as they develop their BPA skills in the future and we cannot wait to support them every step of the way.
Here's what the students had to say about the experience:
"I was worried that I would be out of my depth, but you made me feel welcome and I have learned loads about BPA and about crime scene examination. Thank you Jo and Gillian."
"Exceptional course. Highly recommend!"
"I have been waiting for Advanced BPA training for years and this course did not disappoint. Great training, great facilities and great people."
"Thank you Gillian and Jo for sharing your experiences with us. It was amazing!"
