DEEP DIVE INTO OUR LEVEL 2 TRAINING

We get a lot of enquiries from people who are curious about Level 2 BPA training but want to understand what actually happens so they can decide if the training is for them. This is particularly the case for CSIs and graduates who are not sure how BPA training fits with their current role or career aspirations.

So here's the full breakdown of those 5 days:

Day 1: Building Foundations

We start with blood dynamics. Not theory from a textbook - actual blood hitting different surfaces at various angles. You'll start to build an understanding of the factors that affect how single blood drops behave. You might start to think that "impact spatter" you photographed last month might not be what you thought.

Day 2: Pattern Classification Deep Dive

We investigate the main spatter patterns. This is where it gets practical. We recreate weapon strikes, cast-off patterns, and blood projected from damaged blood vessels. You'll handle blood evidence, not just look at photos. This course is not death by powerpoint - it is underpinned by the ethos, 'see it, say it, do it'. We will show you how to differentiate bloodstains using Objective Criteria. By the end of Day 2 you will have changed your approach to bloodstain classification. Trust me.

Day 3: Reconstruction

This is a thought-provoking day where we investigate the bloodstains that are created in a range of simulated assault scenarios. Real clothing. Actual blood patterns. You'll compare your lived experience of what happened, with the bloodstains that were actually produced - curated by instructors who have over 70 combined years of experience evaluating blood scenes and bloodstained items. This is the bit that transforms your understanding from "I think" to "in my experience". Your brain will start to tell you to expect the unexpected and to recognise the strengths and limitations of bloodstain pattern analysis.

Day 4: Putting knowledge into practice

Having completed your written assessment earlier in the day, you will work in teams through a case-scenario, drawing on your combined experience of the blood experiments and your own portfolio to formulate an effective BPA strategy; employ techniques to recognise, minimise and avoid contextual bias, classify and interpret bloodstains using Objective Criteria and evaluate your findings in the context of case scenarios and accounts. You will also learn how to document bloodstains and implement an effective sampling strategy so that you can focus your DNA submissions and item examinations.

Day 5: Case presentations & Certification

After putting the finishing touches to your group evaluations, you will present your findings to the rest of us and we will discuss the challenges that you faced and identify mechanisms to deal with them. On completion of the course, and having passed the written assessment, you're eligible for IABPA membership - where you can access the international BPA community and continue your BPA journey.

It is obvious this course is built on years of experience. It was a privilege to be part of it and I feel like everyone should have the opportunity to experience it - Crime Scene Professional.

Amongst all of this, you will collaborate with practitioners from different agencies, who have different roles and different perspectives and I promise that you will learn more than 'just BPA'. This is a community and an immersive experience led by specialists who are at the forefront of BPA policy and practice.

This course won't make you a BPA expert overnight, but it will help you to recognise and maximise the value that BPA can bring to an investigation.

I expected theory. Instead, I got hands-on skills I used the following week at a serious assault scene - West Midlands CSI

And it all takes place at our bespoke training facility at the UK Resilience Academy near York.

We understand that budgets are tight - but this unique course is money well spent. It meets IABPA educational standards and provides practitioners with:

  • Skills that help focus DNA budgets on key samples from complex blood scenes

  • BPA certification that enhances your unit's capabilities

  • Career development pathways for you and your team

  • 24/7 access to our online BPA Community space

FACT: most UK forces approve this training because it builds internal expertise rather than relying on external experts for every case and, importantly, helps them to understand when a BPA opinion could help their case.

Need help justifying this to your force? Contact us and we'll send you specific examples of how other units have successfully made the case or introduce you to our past students who can tell you how they have used the training.

NEXT COURSE:

2-6 March 2026 at UK Resilience Academy, York

All-inclusive package: training course, on-site accommodation, meals

Maximum 12 participants for personal attention
